Canasta is a rummy style card game, invented in Uruguay in the 1930s, suitable for 2-6 players per table playing as pairs. It is possible to play as individuals, but is best played with 4 people per table playing as two pairs. It uses two packs of playing cards with four jokers per table. There are many variations of the game, so the rules we use are based on the classic game.
It is very quick game to learn but intriguing to play. Incidentally, Canasta means basket in Spanish and refers to the ‘basket’ that held the discards. We have two Canasta groups and both use very similar rules.
