Description: The Group came into being in early 2015. We are nearly all new to the Ukulele and are starting from scratch. However two of the group have experience on guitars and are able to guide us in the musical aspects and suggest different songs and pieces of music which keep up moving forward.

Most of the group have purchased Ukuleles and we have been fortunate to obtain discounts from two local suppliers so that the out lay for someone new to this need not be too great. Some members have purchased from the internet and total outlay for a Uke., bag, tuner, and beginners instruction book  might only be in the region of £50 or so, this being for a Soprano Uke. whilst the slightly larger Concert and all the kit might rack up twice that.

At our meetings we try to have practiced our “homework “ and that has been trying to master 4 basic chords, (the Beatles only started with 3), and doing those without looking. It can be hard on the finger tips but the tuition books suggest 10 to 15 minutes a day so that you can build up your stamina and feel.

We are very fortunate to have been invited to meet at a Group member’s house, for the size of the group at the moment that works well with room for a few extras.

Learning some thing new is not as arduous as you might imagine, and any new member would be amongst a like-minded group who readily admit that many of them do not read music but as we are strumming along there is no need at the moment, the downloaded songs come with chord diagrams to follow, all you need then is to keep up.

We have already paid a visit to “The Nottingham Ukulele Orchestra” and are in contact with the U3A group at Southwell who we may well talk to in the future.

When most of us hear the word Ukulele, we probably associate it with the comic songs of the late George Formby.

However, the repertoire of the

Ukulele Orchestra of Great Britain includes such diverse titles as:

“Anarchy in the UK”, made famous by “The Sex Pistols”;

The Who’s “Pinball Wizard”;

Kate Bush’s “Wuthering Heights”;

David Bowie’s “Life on Mars”;

“Born to be Wild” by Steppenwolf;

Hawkwind’s “Silver Machine”

Ennio Morricone’s theme to the ‘Spaghetti Western’ “The Good, the Bad, and the Ugly”;

Bill Hailey’s “Rock Around the Clock”;

“I Like to be in America” by Leonard Bernstein; and

Eric Coates’ “The Dambusters March”.

Truly something for everyone!
